TCP based Flow and Congestion Control in Content Centric Networks

Content centric networking (CCN) is a paradigm shift from the way how networks of today work. The focus of networking in CCN is on the content and not on the hosts that are involved in a communication. One of the key cornerstones of today’s communication model is the use of flow and congestion control to pipeline data and take appropriate action when perceived congestion occurs in a network. TCP of the TCP/IP protocol suite has shown us how applications perform extremely well in different communication situations. Flow and congestion control mechanisms used in TCP are ideally suited for CCN applications to improve their performance. Due to the architectural differences that CCN has over TCP/IP based networks, there are a number of issues that need to be addressed to incorporate flow and congestion control into CCN. The work presented here identifies these issues and devises a simple flow and congestion control algorithm based on TCP but addressing the mentioned issues. This algorithm is implemented in a real test-bed and its performance is evaluated.
